Need a license, get it now
A closed sign will greet motorists looking to renew their driver's license or vehicle title information at the Red Wing License Center Friday, July 21, through Monday, July 24.
To spare customers a drive to out-of-town licensing centers, manager Michele Moskwa warns that offices throughout Minnesota will not offer full services due to a computer system replacement.
"It's not just our office, it's the whole state," she said. "If my door has a sign on it, don't think they can go to Cannon Falls or Rochester."
Online limitations will start Monday, July 17, as the Department of Public Safety updates the 30-year-old mainframe computer system the state uses to maintain vehicle and driver's license transactions and record information.
The new system, according to a news release, will reduce turnaround time for transactions and ensure that customers' information has been updated in real-time.
Although hours and service availability may vary from location during that time, full services are expected to resume July 25.
The DPS release said that customers should expect longer wait times following the update as providers adjust to the new system.
"We should be open full service 8 a.m. Tuesday," Moskwa said. "The wait time might be a little longer just because we close for two days, so it might get busy."

Services and hours may vary among licensing and motor vehicle offices during the system replacement. Statewide service limitations are as follows:
• Online services — Online tab renewal and other driver and vehicle services will be unavailable July 17-24. Customers are encouraged to renew their July tabs online before July 17 to allow ample time for the new stickers to arrive in the mail.
• Office locations — Tab renewal, plate replacement and title application services will be unavailable July 20-24. Driver's license, permit or identification card services will be available at some locations. Some offices may close or modify hours during that time.
• Service stations — Offices will close Saturday, July 22, and vehicle registration, driver's license and title services will be unavailable.
All Dakota County licensing offices will offer limited services. Official licensing centers in Burnsville, Lakeville and Rosemount will remain open, but limit service to non-vehicular records.
Washington County license centers in Stillwater, Woodbury and Forest lake will be closed Saturday, July 22.
Moskwa said she expects to close the Red Wing Licensing Center early July 20, when most vehicle and licensing services will become unavailable. The office will remain closed until Tuesday, July 25.
Driver's license services and DNR services will be available until the office closes July 20, but motor vehicle services such as title transfers will not be available July 20-24.
The Rochester office will maintain regular business hours July 20-24, but will only offer DNR services. The Cannon Falls office will be open regular hours Thursday, July 20 and Friday, July 21, but only DNR and driver's license transactions will be available during that time. Normal services are expected to resume the morning of Tuesday, July 25.
