The number of Minnesotans with Type 2 diabetes is a growing health concern across Goodhue County. Live Well Goodhue County, the local partner of the Minnesota Statewide Health Improvement Partnership, is doing its part to help by organizing Red Wing Diabetes Awareness Week March 3-9.
The week kicks off with a 1-mile Walk to Stop Diabetes at Red Wing Family YMCA beginning
9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3. Registration begins 9 a.m. The walk is free and open to
everyone. Throughout the week, get your blood glucose screenings and know your risk and what can be done to prevent Type 2 diabetes.
Blood glucose screenings will be held at the following Red Wing locations:
• March 3: 10 a.m. to noon at Red Wing Family YMCA where, along with screenings, healthy snack taste testing with a U of M SNAP-Ed Educator will take place.
• March 6: Noon to 2 p.m. at Pier 55/Red Wing Area Seniors and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Care Clinic.
• March 8: 10 a.m. to noon. at Jordan Towers 1 and 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Goodhue County Health & Human Services.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases that result in a person having high blood glucose (blood sugar). When this happens, insulin production is either inadequate (Type 1) or the body does not respond properly to the insulin that is there (Type 2). It is also possible to have both problems resulting diabetes. A person could be diagnosed as prediabetic, which refers to having slightly elevated blood glucose levels putting a person at higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of three American adults has prediabetes. They can typically make simple changes of increasing physical activity and losing weight to delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes.
Are you living with prediabetes and looking to reverse your condition? Take action by participating in a "I CAN Prevent Diabetes" program. The free, 26-session program is taught over the course of one year by a U of M SNAP-Ed Educator and begins in Red Wing on April 17.
Topics include: how to eat healthy, food portion sizes, eating in social settings, stress management and physical activities. Participants are expected to attend classes regularly, track food intake and activities, and do their best. The program is not a diet plan. What makes it different is an individualized approach with personalized weekly feedback. Meetings are in a group setting where all successes are celebrated, big or small.
