Update: Red Wing shooting suspect arrested in Woodbury hotel; victim identified

Two Bonhoeffer scholars to speak in Red Wing

The Bonhoeffer Society of Red Wing will sponsor a presentation and discussion "Dietrich Bonhoeffer: His Beliefs, His Life, His Legacy" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at First Covenant Church.

This free event features presentations by two Bonhoeffer scholars.

The Rev. John W. Matthews, senior pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Apple Valley and former president of the English language section of the International Bonhoeffer Society, will speak on "The Life and Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer: An Overview." This will serve as an introductory course for those who may have heard of Bonhoeffer and want to know more about this German pastor and theologian who was executed for conspiracy to assassinate Hitler.

The second speaker is Dr. Lori Brandt Hale, associate professor of religion at Augsburg University and secretary of the International Bonhoeffer Society. Her topic is "In Conversation with Bonhoeffer in the Age of Trump." People from diverse sides of the political spectrum hear Bonhoeffer speaking to them. What does Bonhoeffer say?

After a soup lunch, there will be a question-and-answer period 1-2 p.m. with the guest speakers. This will be a time for mutual conversation.

This event is to honor the memory of Pastor Mike Hayes, founder of the Red Wing Bonhoeffer Society. The event also celebrates the publication of his book "Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Follower of the Living Jesus: An Authentic Evangelical Appreciation," which he completed just before death in 2018
