Marty Kelly for Sheriff
With the election being a little less then a week away, I want to share why I have chosen to support Marty Kelly throughout his Sheriff candidacy experience.
As some of you know, Marty has been my direct supervisor for some of my career with the Red Wing Police Department. He has not only taught me many valuable law enforcement skills, but has also shown true compassion for his people and the people who he serves.
When I found out I was pregnant, my husband and I were very excited but I also had this overwhelming fear of having to tell my coworkers and my department. I knew as I got further along in my pregnancy, I would need to quit patrolling and I felt so much guilt about being a bad partner.
Although Marty wasnt my supervisor at that time, he was the person I felt comfortable telling. I walked in his office, with tears in my eyes and before I could say anything he says "you are pregnant arent you!" (Still to this day, I dont know how he knew). He spent the next few minutes calming all my nerves and explaining to me the importance of family and told me there is so much more to life than just being a police officer. He believed in me, he believed I could be a successful police officer and a wonderful mom and told me he would be there every step of the way. And now, 6 kids later... just kidding, we only have 2!)
Three weeks before my son was born I lost my dad, unexpectedly, to a heart attack. I always looked at Marty like a father figure. He has many of the same qualities my dad had, selflessness, strong work ethic, and truly a heart of gold. The weeks after my dads passing Marty would continue to check in and offer the biggest, best, dad hugs. Let me tell you, if you havent had a hug from that guy you are missing out!
I reminded Marty when I asked for a sign to put at TNT, that I really didnt want him to win the election. Although he would make an excellent leader of Goodhue County, if elected Sheriff, I will be losing a wonderful supervisor and an even better role model and friend. There are people who do this job for the paycheck , others do the often time thankless jobs because they truly have a heart for people. I will let you make your own conclusion why Marty has been a Police Officer for my entire life.
