Cellist to perform at Christ Episcopal Church
Christ Episcopal Church will present the third in a series of four cello concerts 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6, performed by Aleks Tengesdal. The program presents music of three Russian composers who worked during the period of Soviet oppression.
This program balances the pure, white light of Arvo Pärt’s freshly discovered tintinnabuli musical language with the rich musical voices of the once avant-gardists Krzysztof Penderecki and Alfred Schnittke. These composers suffered from extreme isolation and cultural oppression under Soviet cultural dictates and responded with extreme experimentalism. All of them found ways to thrive under the “concrete” and eventually, when the concrete cracked, they emerged renewed — equipped with completely new musical languages forged by great anguish.
There is no charge for the concert.
