State fall flower show set in Colvill Park

The Minnesota State Horticultural Society District 1 Fall Conference is coming to Red Wing Saturday, Sept. 16.

The public event will be centered on the courtyard at Colvill Park, 515 Nymphara Lane. The day includes the conference, which costs $25, and the free "Celebrating Pollinators Flower Show," open 1-2:30 p.m.

Flower show registration begins 7:30 a.m. and judging runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pavilion 1. The best-in-division winners will be recognized at 2:30 p.m.

The conference runs 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Goodhue County Horticultural Society is the local sponsor.

Keynote speaker Katie Himanga will present "Trees: Sustaining the Landscapes Where You Live, Work and Play." Himanga is a certified forester, certified arborist and University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener will. She owns Heartwood Forestry and has been a consultant, specializing in the management of trees, forests and natural systems in communities, since 1993.

Lise Wolff will present "Medicinal Herbs in the Garden: An Introduction to Herbal Practice." She is one of 200 registered herbalists in Minnesota.

She graduated from the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine and the University of Wales with a Master's of Science in Herbalism. Since in 2010, Wolff has taught at the University of Minnesota through the Center for Spirituality and Healing as part of the

School of Nursing curriculum for the doctorate of nursing practice.

In the afternoon, conference participants will have a choice of three workshops:

• Walk the Trail: Tree ID and Health: Take a walk right outside the building Himanga. She will discuss identification and care considerations of local trees and natural areas.

• Herbal Teas Bags: Making and Taste Testing: Learn about what plants to grow and how to prepare tea with the foliage and/or flowers. Presented by Goodhue County Master Gardeners Nancy Berlin and Peg Hansen.

• How-to's of Flower Show Entering and Judging: Have you considered entering but not sure how? Goodhue County Master Gardeners Joyce Rapp, Joyce Malinowski and Mary Brickzin-Gale will go over the basics.

A country store will be selling items of interest to gardeners. Proceeds will benefit the MSHS District 1 Scholarship fund.
