The Lutheran Ceili Orchestra, a group of Celtic Christian musicians from Wisconsin that has traveled the country playing a blend of hymns and traditional Irish music, is coming to Central Park Sunday Sept. 20. The group will lead a special outdoor worship service for St. John’s Lutheran Church of Red Wing at 10 a.m. that is open to all.
Jimmie Walker, also known as “J.J.” from television’s “Good Times,” is set to detonate some laughs at the State Theatre Saturday Sept. 19 in Zumbrota. “Evening of Laughs” begins at 8 p.m. with comic, magician and juggler Brad Reeder as the opening act. Walker is best known for his role as the broadly strutting, wisecracking J.J. Evans on the 1970s show “Good Times” with his catch-phrase “Dyn-o-mite!” but says his first love is stand-up comedy. Today he plays at clubs across the country.
Three simple words seem to sum up the Sheldon Theatre’s upcoming season — just good music. “It is a celebration of sound,” said new executive director Bonnie Schock, who did not program the season but now has a uniquely external perspective on the eclectic performance lineup. Schock explains the timing is pretty much perfect with the installation of a brand new, state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. “We now have the sound support capacity to knock this stuff out of the park,” she said.

The Flyway Film Festival is seeking volunteers of all ages and abilities to fill a variety of “fun and fast-paced” roles throughout Alma, Pepin, Stockholm, Maiden Rock and Red Wing, says the festival’s operations manager Diana Vaicius. This year’s festival runs Oct. 21-25. Volunteer activities range from ticket and merchandise sales, set up, tear down and crowd-wrangling to specialized roles in projection and sound. Shifts are flexible, but typically four hours long.
At the end of the month the Red Wing Depot Gallery will be ready for harvest. “Harvest Season” will open Saturday Aug.
