The driving range at Mississippi National Golf Links did not open as expected, but it's just a matter of time, according to Jay McCleary, the deputy director of the City of Red Wing Public Works. "We're just obviously waiting on weather," he said. The City Council decided to open up the driving range to the public and especially to the Red Wing High School golf teams, who uses Mississippi National as "one of their main facilities to practice their swings," McCleary said.
Cabela's inaugural National Walleye Tour Fishing Tournament will launch April 26 at Bay Point Park in Red Wing. This is the first tournament that the NWT has sponsored, but Bart Chad, the general manager for NWT, said he and his staff have years of experience to support this tour. "We've all participated, managed or run other tours," he said. "The basic building blocks are all there -- just this wildlife tour is new to our team." The tournament pairs a professional fisherman with an amateur angler at random through a computer. They will fish the Mississippi River from below U.S.
Faith in Action will offer "good food, good company, and a good program" April 18 at the Sheldon Theatre, LaVonne Lommel promises. "I'm excited about the evening," the agency board member said. When guests get to the Sheldon Theatre, Lommel said, they will be welcomed with hors d'oeurves. Then at 7 p.m., the program will start with a skit written by Linda Meacham.
Farmers are encouraged to wait to spread manure until after the snow has melted and the ice in the ground has thawed. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said manure that is spread while the ground is thawing and the snow is melting has a higher chance of running off fields and entering ditches, streams and other water sources that combine with ground water. That runoff can introduce harmful bacteria or nutrients to the water sources and contaminate groundwater, Glen Roberson said.
As the sun floods in house windows and the ground starts looking more green than gray, spring has come with its cohort - spring cleaning. There's a growing movement to use more environmentally friendly cleansers. "Environmentally friendly probably is not using your normal chemicals," said Lisa Daniels, a co-owner of ACE Hardware. The Red Wing store sells a variety of options for spring cleaning, including a brand called Mrs.
Finding the right games for this setting can be a challenge for people of different interests and ages, but with careful selection and compromise, you can make these ideal family nights possible and even supplement education for younger family members. When selecting the board games to bring home, the first thing to consider is the age level of players.
Women's fashion is an ever-molding industry that evolves with social and political changes. When Red Wing was founded in 1857, fashion consisted of full hoop skirts and tight corsets, giving women an hourglass figure. Less than 30 years later, the hoop skirts had disappeared, and the bustle that women strapped around their waists to sit on their backsides became popular.
The Red Wing Municipal Golf Corp. announced a modified proposal at Tuesday's Red Wing 2020 meeting, which functioned as an open forum about Mississippi National Golf Links. RWMGC Vice President Gary Fridell unveiled a plan that still calls for city ownership with the corporation functioning as a non-profit organization -- but under a new time frame and a with few changes. "We run the course but all monies go back into the course. No money for stockholders; no money for owners. It all goes back to the course," Fridell said.
A plane unexpectedly landed at Red Wing Regional Airport after engine failure Friday. The three people on board, the pilot and two adult passengers, were safe. To determine what caused the engine to malfunction, "you have to take it apart and see what's wrong with it," said Sam Blue, the chief operating officer at the airport. "Sometimes things break and you can't really attribute it to anything other than bad luck." The Piper Malibu was flying at 16,000 feet when the engine stopped working. The pilot tried to restart the engine, only to have it stop working again.
The smell of burnt marshmallows and tiki lights are not always synonymous with camping for outdoors enthusiasts in Red Wing. Instead of hunkering down underneath a cozy blanket to enjoy the falling snow through a window pane, some people brave the ever-changing climate of winter to go camping. The Red Wing Environmental Learning Center leads a group of students up to the Boundary Water Canoe Area every year to have this winter experience. The BWCA, located in northern Minnesota, is an area with no cellphone reception and limited satellite signal.
