A seven-goal second period highlighted Red Wing's 12-0 victory over Big Nine Conference foe Mankato West on Saturday. After Taylor Heise and Maria Haley gave the home team a 2-0 lead in the first, Nicole Oberding added two goals in the second, along with one from Kendal Swanson. Heise and Haley both completed hat tricks in the period as well. Oberding got her third of the game in the third, and Heise added a fourth in the final frame. The last goal of the game came from Solveig Roth.
Cannon Falls and nine other teams competed in the Rochester Century Panther Invite on Saturday, with the Bombers finishing fourth with 99.5 points. Plainview-Elgin-Millville won the tournament with 219.0 points, followed by Annandale-Maple Lake (181.0) and Lake ville South (170.5). At 106, Cooper Peterson placed second for Cannon Falls, which was duplicated by Gavin Gates at 138. Dylan Rohr (145), Hayden Strain (160) and Ryan Linde (195) finished in third for the Bombers.
Neither team shot well, especially from the free-throw line, but Red Wing controlled every aspect of the game in a 60-42 victory over Big Nine Conference foe Rochester Century on Saturday.
Goodhue turned a 10-point halftime lead over Stewartville into a 64-47 Hiawatha Valley League victory on Friday. Sydney Lodermeier and McKenzie Ryan each had 14 points for the Wildcats, while Lodermeier added five rebounds and six steals. Ryan had five boards and three steals. Maddy Miller chipped in 12 points.
Pine Island pulled out of its funk just in time, pulling away from Cannon Falls for a 48-34 Hiawatha Valley League victory on Friday.
Stewartville held a one-point lead at halftime, but Goodhue got its offense rolling in the second half to come away with a 46-37 Hiawatha Valley League victory on Friday. The Tigers took a 15-14 advantage into the break, but the Wildcats outscored Stewartville, 32-22, over the final 18 minutes. Taylor Buck had 18 points and four steals to lead Goodhue, with Ben Opsahl adding 13 points and five rebounds. Carter Groski's 14 points were a team best for the Tigers. Goodhue (16-1, 8-1 HVL) heads south to Rochester to face Lourdes on Saturday.
A season sweep of Rochester Century came down on Friday, and it ended a six-game losing streak for Red Wing. The Wingers, who beat the Panthers in early December, knocked them off once again, taking the latest Big Nine Conference game, 63-44. Kipp Adams (17), Jawon Terry (12) and Seth Yeatman (11) all scored in double figures for Red Wing, but the key stats of the night were the Wingers holding Century to 29 percent shooting (16 of 54), and Red Wing out-rebounding the Panthers, 34-22. Adams and Ted Tauer both had seven boards to lead Red Wing.
Gavin Roosen poured in 30 points for Kenyon-Wanamingo on Friday, but Christ's Household of Faith had four players with at least 12 points which led to an 85-66 win over the Knights. Jack Beulke added 14 points, six assists and nine rebounds for K-W, but it was not enough as Jacob Bluhm had 28 points for the Lions. Dillon Alleman (18), Jackson Rohlf (13) and Erik Strandlund (12) also reached double figures for CHOF. K-W (0-15) will look to enter the win column on Tuesday at Rochester Lourdes.
Its second meet at home in as many weeks, Red Wing welcomed its parents for a meet against Winona on Thursday. The Wingers fell, 134.325–139.375, but the crowd pushed Red Wing to 20 personal bests on the day. Six of those bests came on the vault, with Breck Bergin leading the way with a first-place finish of 9.025. Paige Patterson was on the parallel uneven bars with an 8.125, and Bergin was third on the balance beam with a 8.725.
