A five-point game at halftime turned into a runaway win for Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Friday as the Cougars outscored Triton by 16 in the second half to pick up a 71-50 Hiawatha Valley League victory. Isaiah Nolte led Z-M with 19 points, while Robvon Jackson added 13 points and three steals. Jacob Niebuhr came up with 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists in the win. The Cougars (12-7, 5-7 HVL) host Hayfield on Tuesday.
McKenzie Ryan's third 3-pointer was the big one as it sent Goodhue off the floor a 49-46 winner over Hiawatha Valley League rival Hayfield on Friday. “It was pretty fun. We had a 10-point lead that we let get away, but we got the win,” said Wildcats head coach Josh Wieme. “We just ran an offense, and Maddy (Miller) kicked the ball to the corner, the buzzer went off but the ball was in the air. A great job by McKenzie, and by everyone to win this game.”
Pine Island hit nine 3-pointers and cruised to an 80-66 victory over Hiawatha Valley League foe Byron on Friday. Camden Heepke hit six of those long-distance shots, finishing with 26 points for the Panthers. Broc Finstuen had 19 points in the win, with Joe Bauer's 11 points giving Pine Island three double-digit scorers. Bjorn Knudson's 18 points were a game-high for the Bears. Pine Island (15-3, 8-2) finishes a three-game road trip with games at Chatfield on Monday, and at Lake City on Tuesday.
Coming off a win that broke a 40-game losing streak, Kenyon-Wanamingo nearly made it two-straight, but Cannon Falls held off the Knights, 43-41, in a Hiawatha Valley League game that came down to the wire. Ryan Dirckx scored 17 points for the Bombers, and hit a couple of key free throws down the stretch to lead Cannon Falls to victory. The Rockets' Gavin Roosen matched Dirckx with 17 points, adding three steals and a pair of assists as well. Dirckx had six rebounds and four assists, with Anthony Hurton adding five rebounds, four assists and two steals to the winning effort.
A combined 32 points from Morgan Zebro and Lindsay Reps led Red Wing to a 59-36 victory over Big Nine Conference host Mankato East on Friday. Both Zebro and Reps scored 16 points, with Zebro hitting four 3-pointers, and Reps coming through with three steals. Kyli Nelson also had three steals to go with six points. Hanna Rodgers had a team-high six rebounds, and Tayzha Buck dished out seven assists. Natalie Schisel's 13 points led the Cougars, who were held to 12 first-half points. Red Wing (12-5, 10-4 Big Nine) visits Owatonna on Monday, and hosts Austin on Tuesday.
Double-doubles from Makayla Arendt and Ali Hunstad led Zumbrota-Mazeppa to a 66-42 victory over Triton on Friday, which included a 42-18 halftime lead for the Cougars. Arendt finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds while Hunstad totaled 15 points and 14 boards. Natalie Majerus chipped in 11 points and six rebounds in the win. Kendra Peterson led the Cobras with 13 points. Z-M (10-10, 6-8 HVL) heads to Hayfield on Tuesday.
The best team in the Big Nine Conference was no match for Red Wing on Tuesday as Matthew Hurt and Rochester John Marshall took down the Wingers, 75-49. Hurt had 30 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks, with Dedoch Chan adding 14 points and Ray Adams 11 points and 10 boards.
A five-goal second period slammed the door shut on Red Wing as Rochester Lourdes picked up a key Section 1A victory over the Wingers on Thursday, 9-2. Seth Cushing scored both goals for Red Wing, with both coming in the first 6 minutes, 17 seconds of the third period. Teddy Lillico picked up an assist on the first Cushing goal, with Jack Maroushek and Tyler DeFore getting credit on the second. Montana Streit and Duell Buck both had a pair of goals for the Eagles, with Streit adding four assists for a six-point game.
After 40 straight trips to the loss column, the Kenyon-Wanamingo boys' basketball team finally got a long-awaited 'W' on Thursday. In a battle of winless teams, the Knights shot 56 percent from the field and 21 of 31 from the free-throw line to beat Medford 72-51 in non-conference play at Kenyon, ending a 40-game losing streak in the process. K-W's last win came on Dec. 1, 2015 with a victory over Stewartville.
Brendan Noll's double-double led Kasson-Mantorville to a 71-61 victory over Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Thursday. Noll finished the Hiawatha Valley League game with 25 points and 13 rebounds, with teammates Hunter Bzoskie adding 11 and Jacob Gruber 10.
