After going 2-1 on Friday, Zumbrota-Mazeppa took 20th overall with a 1-2 record on Saturday at The Clash National Wrestling Duals in Rochester. The Cougars opened the day with a 32-31 victory over Corona Del Sol, Ariz., but followed with losses to De La Salle, Calif. (35-32) and Owatonna (36-21). Michael Majerus, Caden Steffen and Jarrett Haglund all went 5-1 in the tournament. Kenyon-Wanamingo placed 27th, with losses to Foley, 28-25 and Glenbard North, Ill., 31-28, to go with a 42-31 win over Hermiston, Ore.
Led by 170-pound champion Bailee O'Reilly, Goodhue tied for fourth place in the small-school division of the Bi-State Classic in La Crosse, Wis. on Friday and Saturday. Bailee beat Elijah Alt of River Valley, Wis. in the championship match, winning the title, 3-2. Mason Huemann took fifth at 160 for the Wildcats, and went 7-2 in the two-day tournament. Three other Goodhue wrestlers just missed out on placing, including Maddox O'Reilly (106), John Altendorf (113) and Kaleb O'Reilly (152).
1. Controversy Clouds Red Wing
The outside shooting of St. Charles was able to out-duel Broc Finstuen, Mark Mboya Kotieno and the rest of Pine Island in an 80-77 win for the Saints in the St. Charles holiday tournament finals Friday. “It was a wild one,” said Panthers head coach Jim McNamara. “Very up-and-down the whole game. St. Charles was able to hit 14 3-pointers, while all of ours were inside. It was a tale of two different styles.” Finstuen ended up with 30 points and 10 rebounds while Mboya Kotieno tallied 23 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
On Friday, Zumbrota-Mazeppa opened the 15th annual The Clash National High School Wrestling Duals against Roseburg, Ore., a team ranked 37th in the nation by Intermat. The Cougars were unable to pull the upset, falling 44-19, in the opener of Bracket A. But Z-M rebounded with wins over Glenbard North, Ill., 36-28, and Hastings, 34-21, to earn a spot in the fifth bracket on Saturday. Jarrett Haglund and Michael Majerus both went 3-0, while Maverick Jackson, Jacob Bennett, Caden Steffen and Mike Vath all won twice.
Zumbrota-Mazeppa capped off a 2-0 appearance at the Winona State Invitational on Wednesday, beating Tri-City United 64-48. Willy Heitmann and Alex Guse tied for the Cougars' team high in points with 13. Heitmann had four steals while Guse grabbed four rebounds in the victory. Jacob Niebuhr finished with eight points, six assists, seven rebounds and three steals for Z-M, and Isaiah Nolte added nine points in the victory. Tuesday Zumbrota-Mazeppa 59, Winona Cotter 50
With 14 points from Grand Otte and three 3-pointers as part of an 11-point effort by Carsyn Gunderson, Randolph was able to win Thursday's battle of Lake Byllesby against Cannon Falls, 54-48, in the Cannon Falls-Randolph Holiday Tournament at Randolph. Joey Erickson and Andrew Wenstrom added eight points apiece for the Rockets, followed by seven for Calvin Stoesz.
Up 35-33 at halftime over Dover-Eyota, Pine Island started the second half on a 17-4 run as part of a 72-50 non-conference victory on Thursday in the St. Charles holiday tournament. Pacing the Panthers was Broc Finstuen, who had 22 points and seven rebounds. Mark Mboya Kotieno added 14 points and eight rebounds, Joe Bauer had 10 points, and Brady Braaten finished with nine in the victory.
Goodhue won the four-team Grand Meadow invitational on Thursday, beating the host Superlarks by a score of 55-22. Taylor Buck put in a team-high 15 points for the Wildcats while also accounting for four rebounds and two steals. Lucas Thomforde added eight points, four rebounds and two steals, and Jacob McNamara finished with eight points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Ben Opsahl tallied nine points and six rebounds. Goodhue (10-0) resumes Hiawatha Valley League play Friday, January 6 at home against Kenyon-Wanamingo.
Four players finished in double digits for Pine Island on Wednesday as the Panthers picked up a 68-39 win over Lewiston-Altura in the Winona State Invitational Wednesday. Brooke Sinning paced Pine Island with 14 points, six rebounds and four steals, and Eliza Warneke nearly had a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Autumn Pin came up with 13 points and six assists, and Emilie Rucker added 11 points and seven rebounds.
