Monday night, Red Wing City Council took up Ordinance No. 115, triggered by the recent Minnesota Supreme Court's Hensel decision. That decision held that the law defining conduct that "disturbs an assembly or meeting, not unlawful in its character" as disorderly conduct was unconstitutional, "a serious overbreadth problem." Here, the city has decided to consider an ordinance of its own with language that puts the city on the wrong side of the law. Why would the city want to do this?
Goodhue County has had plenty of drama over the ZIP Rail slicing down to Rochester that died in 2016 and then Gov. Mark Dayton's effort to start a different line, that signs on farms across Goodhue County derided as the ZOMBIE ZIP Rail.
U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan did an outstanding job getting major tax reform legislation approved in his oftentimes divided chamber. His leadership on the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act should be commended. While the Wisconsin State Assembly majority membership is much smaller than the U.S. House, I understand how difficult it can be to bring people together, even in your own party. I want to thank Ryan for moving this plan forward because Wisconsin needs federal tax reform to become law.
To stimulate the U.S. economy to "levels you haven't seen in many years," President Donald Trump is proposing to cut federal income taxes, for most folks in general, but predominantly for really affluent families and mega-corporations. His proposal is so skewed to the wealthy that over the next 10 years, more than half of his multi-trillion dollar tax cut will go to the wealthiest 1 percent.
I have been an avid bicyclist on the Cannon Valley Trail for over 20 years. I have always been pleased to see how well the trail is maintained. This trail is a unique source of recreation and beauty which draws people from well beyond the region. The work that everyone puts into maintaining and improving the trail really does make a difference for people and is a great benefit to the cities and counties surrounding it. Thank you for your support in keeping the Cannon Valley Trail a safe and enjoyable biking/hiking trail. Dan Pesonen
Federal rental assistance is used by over 93,000 low-income households in Minnesota. Almost 20,000 of those rely on the Public Housing program. Public Housing is a government-funded program that provides rental housing to low-income households. Renters must pay 30 percent of their income for rent. The subsidy stays with the building if they move out. When a family's housing costs make up more than half of their income, low-income families are at higher risk of ending up homeless. Statewide, 139,000 low-income households pay more than half their income for rent.
Organized sports are great for kids in so many ways, but there is a downside to consider: injury. Football and hockey are examples of collision sports with frequent athlete impacts generating significant force magnified by increasing size and speed as kids get older. Injuries are common — most are minor, a few are catastrophic and an unknown number are hidden and may not be apparent for years.
Congressman Ron Kind, I received your taxpayer-paid mailing telling about all you are doing for us. How about this Obamacare, which you support? The cost of supplement insurance has gone up over 50 percent since Obamacare for Mary and I. Have you tried to buy health insurance for your family? How do you expect our young families to buy insurance?
