A new report ranks Minnesota among the most expensive states for smokers in cost per year and over a lifetime. Minnesota placed 44th out of 50 states and the District of Columbia in total cost per smoker in both categories when adding out-of-pocket expenses as well as the hypothetical loss of financial opportunity, health care costs, income loss and other costs, according to the report by WalletHub released this month.
Minnesota drivers have a new tool for checking winter road conditions thanks to cameras installed on some of the transportation department’s 838 snowplows. The cameras periodically take still photos of the road and upload them to www.511mn.org .

A Goodhue County deputy is out of the hospital and recovering after being assaulted Wednesday, Jan. 18, while serving a court order in a Red Wing neighborhood, according a Sheriff’s Office news release Thursday. Patrol Sgt. Jason Johnson sustained “significant” though non life-threatening injuries in the incident, the Sheriff’s Office says.

A Bloomington, Minn., man accepted a plea agreement Wednesday, Nov. 30, to second-degree burglary of a dwelling for his role in a Sept. 26 incident that included multiple chases and vehicle crashes near Cannon Falls. Alexander Fredrick Parker, 23, was sentenced to 120 days local confinement in Dakota County minus 66 days credit for time served. The sentence is to be served as work release if eligible. A 28-month prison term for the felony was stayed for 10 years of probation, including conditions that he pay restitution and undergo chemical dependency evaluation and treatment.
