GOODHUE — Jacob McNamara will leave his hometown for college in the fall, but the Goodhue senior said he plans to return. McNamara, son of Dave and Rose McNamara, will study education at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn., with hopes of coming back to Goodhue Public Schools as a faculty member. “Ever since I was younger I wanted to do something with school, either a teacher or a coach,” he said, adding that working with special education students in Goodhue opened his eyes to possible career paths. “I want to give back what everybody gave me, all of my teachers.”
WOODBURY — A mix of adults, teens and children descended on Royal Oaks Elementary School with one thing in common: a shared interest in unicycling. Twin Cities Unicycle Club held an open practice in the school gymnasium May 23 to highlight an activity club members said provides good exercise and even better company. "The big things I like about unicycling is it's a great way to stay in shape, and it's also an excellent group for camaraderie," said Art Kotz of Woodbury, the club's vice president.

LAKE CITY — A dreary sky and occasional rain set the backdrop for a solemn memorial service May 19 to honor the memory of fallen law enforcement officers. The annual Southeastern Minnesota Police Week Law Enforcement Memorial Service, typically held in Rochester, was held at First Lutheran Church to mark the unveiling of a memorial statue for slain Lake City police officer Shawn Schneider. The church housed a full crowd with attendees overflowing into the entry area.
A new self-help book for women to find balance and reduce stress in their lives features a love story from a small town in southeastern Minnesota. The story of Andrea and Chad Hanson started in 1998 with a tragedy: Chad, a Minnesota Department of Transportation engineer who at that time was still a student at the University of Minnesota, fell asleep while driving and crashed, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.
As backyard poultry-keepers prepare their flocks this spring season, Minnesota Department of Health is reminding families of a few safety tips to avoid spreading illness. Goodhue County Attorney's Office issued a criminal complaint April 19 in the shooting death of a Red Wing man. Charles Deonta Jones, 26, faces two counts of second-degree murder, one count of third-degree murder and one count of second-degree manslaughter in the death of Dangelo Masterjohn, the attorney's office announced Wednesday afternoon. A second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. The complaint alleges Jones shot Masterjohn in the chest at short range in the early morning hours of April 18.
The death of a man found on a sidewalk in Red Wing’s East End is being investigated as an apparent homicide, according to police.
Evan Weckerling was born Jan. 27 in the passenger seat of a minivan on the side of Highway 58 north of Zumbrota. The time of birth was a little after 9 a.m., though parents Katelyn and Derek Weckerling said they were too preoccupied to note the exact minute. The prospect of a roadside delivery was scary enough, but the situation was all the more dire because of a congenital heart condition that made it imperative for the baby boy to get to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, stat.
