Healthy gums are an important aspect of oral health, but the benefits don't stop there. February has traditionally been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month, a time to recognize the role of gum health in a person's overall health. More than 47 percent of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. Prevalence increases to more than 70 percent for adults aged 65 and up.
A plea agreement was reached Monday, Feb. 5, in the 2017 shooting death of a 27-year-old man in Red Wing's East End. Charles Deonta Jones, 27, of Red Wing, pleaded guilty to counts of second-degree murder without intent and reckless discharge of a firearm in a municipality, both felonies. A host of other charges stemming from the incident, including additional second- and third-degree murder charges as well as second-degree manslaughter, will be dismissed under the agreement reached in Goodhue County District Court.
U.S. Rep. Jason Lewis will be checked out at a Virginia hospital after a train carrying Republican lawmakers hit a garbage truck Wednesday morning, Jan. 31. A message from Lewis relayed by the Republican congressman's staff on Twitter Wednesday afternoon indicated he would be seen at a Virginia hospital "per standard concussion protocol." The message continued: "I'm fine compared to, tragically, the truck drivers, and thankful for the prompt action of our doctors and first responders. My thoughts are with the family of the individual who passed away."
Two Wisconsin men were arrested after a truck crashed into the Red Wing Public Library late-Tuesday, Jan. 30, authorities said. A Red Wing police officer patrolling the area of Main Street and West Avenue observed a red pickup stalled or stopped on Main Street near the Studebaker parking ramp. A man reportedly ran from the passenger side of the truck and into the parking ramp, according to a Red Wing police news release Jan. 31. Officers pursued the man to the northwest corner of the ramp and located two men.

Temperatures could climb to as high as the mid-40s Wednesday, Jan. 10, but snow and freezing weather is back in the forecast. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Dakota, Goodhue, Pierce and St. Croix counties and a winter weather advisory for Washington County. The alerts warns of mixed wintry precipitation late Wednesday night turning to snow Thursday morning. With snowfall totals adding up, people around the region are getting their snow blowers out of storage. Before the next big snow hits, the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute recommends owners prepare their snow blowers ahead of time and review the manual. "Weather today is more unpredictable than ever, and you need to have your snow thrower serviced and ready to power up," OPEI President and CEO Kris Kiser said in a news release. "You want to have the right fuel on hand and review your owner's manual now so you can use your equipment safely."
Red Wing in 2017 joined the growing list communities affected by the tree-killing insect emerald ash borer. Larvae were discovered in an ash tree on Barn Bluff, prompting an emergency quarantine in March limiting the movement of firewood and ash material out of Goodhue County. More than a dozen counties currently are under emerald ash borer quarantine around southeastern Minnesota, the Twin Cities and Duluth.
A murder trial scheduled to begin Monday was pushed to February after a witness last week changed their testimony to now say they saw the April 2017 shooting that left a Red Wing man dead. The attorney for Charles Deonta Jones, 27, asked the court for a continuance Dec. 11 in the wake of the change in testimony. No other witnesses set to testify in the trial claimed to have seen the shooting occur.
