When holiday travelers prepare to leave home this week for Thanksgiving, they’ll be filling up their tanks with the cheapest gas prices in years. The national average for regular unleaded gasoline is projected to be $1.99 per gallon by Thursday, 80 cents lower than last year and the cheapest since March 2009, according to GasBuddy.com, an online gas prices monitor. The average cost of gas had already fallen to $1.994 per gallon in Minnesota as of Tuesday afternoon, down more than 70 cents from last year’s average of $2.696.

Dr. Bobbie Gostout was named Mayo Clinic’s new vice president Friday at a quarterly meeting of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees. Gostout will be the physician leader for Mayo’s community practice in the Midwest, including Mayo Clinic Health System in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa, as well as Minnesota-based community care locations, the clinic announced.

Campground proposals sought Goodhue County Board voted 4-1 to issue a request for proposals to purchase county-owned land next to Lake Byllesby Park for a campground. The board voted last month to end a public-private partnership with Cannon Falls Canoe and Bike to develop a campground that stalled due to a lack of state grant funding. Commissioner Ron Allen forwarded the motion with a comment noting the county is working to re-zone the property for campground use.
A local group has pledged to help Vietnam War veterans denied benefits due to less-than-honorable discharges upgrade their status to get treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and health problems from exposure to the defoliant Agent Orange.
