Bank tellers issued food stamps and handled utility bills along with handling customers’ paycheck deposits and withdrawals when Jean Renschen got into the business 32 years ago. “We counted cash by hand,” she recalled. “I often think back before the machinery and technology.” Today, customer service means much more. The teller supervisor at Associated Bank’s Red Wing location said her staff processes rapid transactions, monitors debit cards and stays alert for fraud. The tellers also teach customers how to use digital banking safely.
A new certified nurse midwife recently joined the team of women’s health providers at Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing. Glenda Pinkham earned her Master of Nursing degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and has an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Jared Luhman of Goodhue will compete in Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers & Ranchers Discussion Meet this fall. Luhman was among the young farmers from across the state who competed in a preliminary contest in January. The contestants were judged on their basic knowledge of critical farm issues, and their ability to exchange ideas and information in a setting aimed at cooperative problem solving. Luhman was one of the eight semi-finalists selected to compete in the final two rounds of competition at the MFBF annual meeting in November.
This year was the first time Salsa-licious had a panel of judges, and Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota came away with two honors at the 2016 celebration: best costume and best red salsa. The annual fundraiser through United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha & Pierce Counties featured more than 20 salsas that people could taste Saturday at Sargent’s Nursery in Red Wing. Coordinated by the local Masons, the event benefits any participating non-profit.
