You don't have to travel around the world to enjoy a variety of cuisines, but you can pretend you're adventuring while eating close to home. Red Wing Downtown Main Street has launched a passport promotion program for March. People who patronize participating restaurants and coffeeshops have their passports stamped and become eligible for prizes.
Nothing says midwinter celebration quite like Mardi Gras does, and Best of Times Bookstore will mark the addition of "Café" to its name with festivities right up to Fat Tuesday. The fun starts, according to Denise Alt. Beverages and treats will match the theme and children will receive free beads like people wear in New Orleans. Friday is Game Night with music. The bookstore, now open until 8 p.m. Friday, has board games for friends and families to play. Red Wing folk/rock artists Quaking Bog will perform Friday.

The public health nurse and mother of three cares so much she started Women's Cents, which not only raises and gives away money to agencies that serve children and families but includes education in the process. She's served on the Red Wing School Board, United Way board and parent advisory councils. She's taught Sunday school at United Lutheran Church. A Hager City man who once ran off with his minor-age cousin has forfeited $35,000 in cash bonds because he failed to attend court hearings. Wade J. Swenson, 40, is accused of sexually assaulting two relatives, including the cousin, and secretly videotaping family members.
Patriotic clothing and accessories are nothing new, but the local Peebles store is making that show support include a financial boost to military families, too. Peebles has launched a patriotic-themed, reusable shopping tote. All proceeds benefit Operation Homefront, a national organization providing emergency financial assistance to the families of U.S. soldiers. Goodhue County Chemical Health Initiative staff members attended a national prevention conference in Washington, D.C., Feb. 7-10.
Riedell Skates has a new brand of ice skates flying across the ice. Eclipse Blades hit the market this month. The ice skate blades offer competitive skaters blades that have state-of-the-art design as well as good looks. "Their beauty is enhanced with high-technology finishing, which creates a technically advanced blade that meets both the artistry and athleticism the sport demands," Vice President of Marketing Dan Riegelman said in a press release. Eclipse Blades have edge consistency and improved rake engagement, company officials said.
The first flakes started falling aroudn 9 a.m. Sunday in a storm that forecasters expect will dump more than a foot of snow on the Red Wing area. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning that will remain in effect until noon Monday. Mankato, Minn., already reported 3 inches by midmorning and Owatonna, which is an hour southwest of Goodhue County, had an inch. The National Weather Service predicted the heaviest snowfall would come in Sunday afternoon. Red Wing could get up to 8 inches by evening.
Treasure Island Resort & Casino will offer a different type of deal this weekend. The usual dealers will be at the blackjack tables, certainly, but in addition the Event Center will offer deal-makers. Personalities from the History Channel's "Pawn Stars" will be on hand from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Pathways to Business Growth" will work with Automated Equipment in Red Wing starting this year to find new markets as well as generate ideas and products. Enterprise Minnesota launched the program, which eventually will work with 25 Minnesota-based manufacturers over three years.
Charter Communications increased Internet speeds in the Red Wing area. This is Charter's second free speed increase in the past twelve months. Based on a residential customer's Internet package, download speeds increased Monday from up to 8 megabits per second to up to 12 Mbps or from 16 Mbps to up to 18 Mbps.
