Lt. Gov. Carol Molnau, center, admits defeat Saturday to Gov. Tim Pawlenty as having the most fish during the Governor's Fishing Opener on White Bear Lake. Molnau caught a 19-inch walleye about 5 a.m. - before the start of the competition between the two. Pawlenty caught three northern pike and a bass. Fisheries biologists recorded information about this adult male steelhead Tuesday morning at the Knife River fish trap before sending the fish on upstream to spawn. The fish is held by Matt Ward, Department of Natural Resources anadromous fish specialist at French River. The DNR has been trapping and studying steelhead on the Knife River since 1996 in an effort to understand why the population had been decreasing since the 1970s. (Sam Cook / scook@duluthnews.com)

Anglers took to Mississippi River waters en masse Thursday, as temperatures in Red Wing hovered around 70 degrees. The National Weather Service forecast calls for more comfortable weather today, though showers were predicted for the weekend.
