Wrestling: Pine Island erases early deficit
Lake City jumped out to a big lead, but Pine Island chipped away before a big run late lifted the Panthers to a 34-31 victory on Thursday.
Two early forfeits and a Nash Nelson pin had the Tigers up 18-0 after just three weights, but Pine Island answered with four-straight wins, including two by fall from Evan Goplen and Mason Pike, and a major decision from Dawson Fallon.
Thomas Frank ended the Panthers' points splurge with a major at 160 pounds. But Pine Island picked up a major of its own from Cade Predmore at 170. And from there, the Panthers got a forfeit at 182, and a technical fall from Brayden Burkhalter at 195.
Ivan Vargas got six more points for the Tigers at 220, but a double forfeit at 285 sealed Pine Island's win.
K-W cruises in road triangular
Kenyon-Wanamingo had little trouble on Thursday, taking two matches at the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton triangular.
The Knights beat Maple River, 42-15, to open the night, then knocked off the hosts, 63-3. Maple River won the final dual of the day, 51-24, over WEM/JWP.
