Track: Red Wing girls win section True Team; boys sixth
The Red Wing girls' track and field team is headed back to Stillwater for the third straight year.
With 556.5 team points in Tuesday's Section 1AA True Team meet at Paul Giel Field in Winona, the Winger girls will head back to state True Team, where they will try to defend their state championship from a year ago. Red Wing held off Byron (489) and Plainview-Elgin-Millville (435) to secure the section's top spot.
Red Wing swept the relay events, accounting for 120 of the team's points. The foursome of Paige Patterson, Nicole Oberding, Breck Bergin and Tyler McGrath won the 4x100-meter relay in 51.62 seconds while Emily Hart, Taylor Heise, Carolyn Hanson and Tyler McGrath clinched the 4x200 in 1:47.54. In the 4x800, Adelle DeSutter, Arianna Mollgaard, Grace Dube and Cecelia De Jong finished first in 9:58.14, and Hart, Heise, DeSutter and Elayna Meyer closed out the meet with a first-place time of 4:11.20 in the 4x400.
Individually, the Wingers benefited from a huge night from Madisyn Lyons, who accounted for 77 points in four events, including two wins. Lyons set a new school record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet 11.5 inches while also placing first in the 300 hurdles in 49.14. Lyons was also the runner-up in the high jump at 5-2, and was third place in the triple jump at 35-5.5.
Also taking top spots for Red Wing were Emily Hart in the 400 (59.35) and Patterson in the triple jump (36-0).
Meyer (800; 2:27.44), Grace Johnson (3,200; 11:54.90), Elle Thorson (100 hurdles; 16.70) and Ella Scott (300 hurdles; 49.33) had second-place finishes. Heise (400; 1:01.59) and Tori Leitner (3,200; 11:57.35) had third-place finishes, Meyer was fourth in the 1,600 (5:29.58), and DeSutter (800; 2:29.45) and Johnson (1,600; 5:31.97) both had fifth-place finishes to aid the Wingers' cause.
The Class 2A state True Team begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 20 at Stillwater High School.
Weston Wyatt had the top finish for the Red Wing boys' track and field team at the section True Team meet as the Wingers finished in sixth place with 365 points.
Stewartville won the section title with a score of 491, besting PEM (408) and Winona (404).
Wyatt was the top finisher in the 800 with a time of 2:03.49, while teammate Bryan Zucker placed fifth at 2:08.85. Tom Nemanich (4:40.70) and Tucker Wallin (4:41.74) placed 2-3 in the 1,600 while Nemanich (10:10.46) and Asa Beckner (10:16.89) were third and fifth, respectively, in the 3,200. Senior Daryl Pickett had three top-five finishes with fourth in the high jump (5-10) and fifth in both the long jump (20-0) and triple jump (40-6.25).
The Red Wing boys also had a first-place time in the 4x800 relay in 8:29.59.
