Baseball: Mahtomedi keeps Wingers grounded

Red Wing got a solid start from Ben Domagala, but Mahtomedi manufactured just enough offense in a 3-2 Zephyrs victory on Friday.

Domagala went all seven innings for the Wingers, giving up eight hits and three earned runs with four innings of four or fewer batters faced. Mahtomedi struck out four times and walked just once off Domagala. But a sacrifice bunt in the top of the first inning set up the Zephyrs' first run, and Mahtomedi scored twice more in the fifth thanks to a seven-pitch walk to lead off the frame and three-straight singles to follow.

Red Wing got a run in the fourth to tie the game. Tyler DeFore singled and stole second base, and then scored on Seth Cushing's one-out single. In the seventh, the Wingers got a single from Seth Yeatman, who scored on a DeFore fielder's choice. But Red Wing's third out came one batter later and DeFore was stranded at first.

The Wingers had eight hits, led by Zach Harding's 2-for-3 showing.

Red Wing (3-4) hosts Rochester John Marshall on Tuesday for a Big Nine Conference doubleheader.
