Several changes ahead for area teams after realignment

Area schools will see some drastic changes in which teams will be in postseason brackets beginning with the 2017-18 school year. In particular, football and wrestling saw dramatic movement.

Every two years, the Minnesota State High School League realigns sections and classes, moving schools around based on an enrollment formula the MSHSL uses that subtracts a percentage of free and reduced lunch students from the actual enrollment.

This round of realignment hit the area hard, it appears, because of Byron and Stewartville dropping a class in most sports. The Bears and Tigers have been in Class 4A in football, but now are in Class 3A, and it forced several changes.

Below are the notable moves for our area schools Cannon Falls, Goodhue, Kenyon-Wanamingo, Lake City, Pine Island, Randolph, Red Wing and Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
