Girls Golf: Wingers secure Missota Conference title

Playing in the final Missota Conference meet, the Red Wing girls golf team clinched the conference title after shooting a team score of 328 at Fountain Valley Golf Course in Farmington. The Wingers shot seven strokes better than second-place New Prague’s 335. Chanhassen (365), Northfield (370) and Chaska (405) rounded out the top five.

“It was close all the way (with New Prague),” said Red Wing head coach Mark Herzog. “The big thing was we got good scores from Stephanie (Herzog) and Nicole (Schammel). And (New Prague) had to count a 94 while we had an 88.”

Stephanie Herzog took medalist honors with a round of 74, which beat New Prague’s duo of Kenzie Neisen (77) and Taylor Ledwein (78). Schammel’s 79 was good for fourth place.

Red Wing got strong scores from Solveig Christenson and Sophia Yoemans, with the two carding 87 and 88, respectively.

“The thing that was neat to see was (Christenson) parred her last four holes,” Mark Herzog said. “It was kind of a big thing for us, and that was nice to see.”

With the regular season over, Red Wing shifts its focus to Day 1 of the Section 1AA tournament, which is set for Friday at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester.
