Softball: Red Wing shuts out Holy Angels

The first time against Academy of Holy Angels, Red Wing went down 7-1 in the season opener. The second time around, the Wingers showed how much they have improved since the April 9 game, beating the Stars 3-0.

Scoreless after three innings, Red Wing went up 1-0 in the top of the fourth with an RBI hit from McKenzie Cota, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Then in the seventh, the Wingers tacked on a pair of insurance runs, thanks to a two-out, two-run double from Maria Furlong that scored Hannah Walch and Mary Bender.

And with a strong pitching performance from Emily Boxrud (seven innings, six strikeouts, no walks), backed up with a strong defense, Red Wing held the Stars to four hits.

“We were really focused on getting this win, and winning two in a row here, that’s so important,” said Wingers’ head coach Jon Bohmbach. “Especially early this season, our goal was limiting teams to 27 outs, and we’ve done that two games in a row now.”

On Thursday, Red Wing (7-8, 2-7 Missota) heads to Chaska for a doubleheader.
