Facing one of the toughest fields outside of the state tournament, Red Wing more than held its own at Mississippi National Golf Links on Tuesday, taking third behind defending Class 2A champion Detroit Lakes.

The Lakers, with a score of 313, narrowly edged New Prague (315) and the Wingers (317). Edina, the defending Class 3A champions, came in fourth with a 326, while Wayzata came in fifth in the 18-team field with a 328.

“We played really well today,” said Red Wing head coach Mark Herzog. “It was a blustery day, and the wind was hard for the course, it made some of the holes very difficult. And the rough is up today, it was almost a penalty. The rough and wind really put a premium on hitting the ball straight.”

Stephanie Herzog led the Wingers with a 73, while Nicole Schammel’s 77 was second on the team. Reagan Haley (83) and Solveig Christenson (84) completed the scoring with Sophia Yoemans (88) and Kayla Oberding (88) also breaking 90. New Prague’s Taylor Ledwein earned medalist honors by tying the course record of 66. Red Wing’s Marisa Toivonen, now playing at Division II Augustana, had the same score in 2012.

“Detroit Lakes has been dominant, and it helps to be on your home course,” Herzog said. “But even if you add eight to 10 strokes for the home course, we’re still right there. And we had good third and fourth scores today. It was one of those days where we had good competition, and when all those kids are there at one time, the kids tend to press. But I think we were relaxed today.”

The Wingers are off for a week with their next competition coming at the Missota Conference finals on May 21 at Fountain Valley Golf Club in Farmington.
