Softball: New Prague shuts down Red Wing

A three-run game through five innings turned into a bit of a blowout as New Prague secured a 9-0 Missota Conference victory over Red Wing Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans had 17 hits in the game, including eight combined in the sixth and seventh innings where New Prague put up a total of six runs to pull away.

Hailey Kuhl had the lone hit for the Wingers, breaking up the no-hit bid with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kuhl stole second while the next batter, Hailee Johnson, walked to set up Red Wing’s only threat in the game.

“They’re solid,” said Red Wing head coach Jon Bombach of New Prague. “They’re second in our conference right now, and they might be the best team in our conference. They have two good pitchers, their lineup is good top to bottom, they have some speed, they have some power. They’re a good team.”

The Wingers will have several chances to right the ship this week with a trip to Holy Angels and Shakopee on Wednesday, a doubleheader at Chaska on Thursday, and visits from Northfield on Friday and Shakopee on Saturday. The Missota has been tough on Red Wing (6-8, 1-7 Missota), but Bombach is not worried about the conference.

“We lost 18-1 (to New Prague) the first time,” Bombach said. “This isn’t a silver lining, but these aren’t the teams we see in the playoffs. We’re getting better by playing teams like this. This one got away at the end, but we’ll keep the kids’ heads up to see the bigger picture.”
