It was going to take a lot for Red Wing to take out ninth-ranked (2A) Shakopee. With the Sabers stacking the singles lineup, the Wingers needed to sweep the doubles, then get an upset somewhere in singles competition.

By the end of Tuesday’s Missota Conference opener at Twin Bluff Middle School, visiting Shakopee took care of business, sweeping the singles on the way to a 5-2 victory.

“It’s a shame that we have to play Shakopee in the first round of the conference because they’re our greatest opposition to win the conference,” said Wingers’ head coach Matt Kavanagh.

Jackson Allen, who is ranked seventh individually in Class 2A, took No. 1 singles for the Sabers with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Isaac Toivonen, leading the Shakopee charge. Raja Arul (6-1, 6-4), Alex Exsted (6-1, 6-3) and Preston Husom (6-3, 7-5) also won their respective singles matches to effectively seal the Sabers’ victory.

Needing to do damage with its pairings, Red Wing’s No. 1 duo of Nick Powers and Travis Toivonen came up with a clutch victory.

Facing the Sabers’ Brandon Lehn and Raghuram Inturi, Powers and Travis Toivonen overcame a 7-6 second-set loss to win the decisive third set on the way to a 6-4, 6-7, 7-2 victory.

“They just lost some focus putting away balls in the end of the second set,” Kavanagh said, “but once they got into that third-set tiebreaker, they got fired up and got a good start to (the third set), which was important.”

In No. 2 doubles, the Wingers’ Marcus Veith and Josh Lyons blew out Brady Pudwill and Garrett Mitchell for a 6-1, 6-1 win.

“That was the most one-sided match of the day and we won it,” Kavanagh said.

Weather pending, Red Wing (1-1 overall) heads to Lakeville South on Wednesday.

Red Wing 6, Winona 1

Red Wing met little resistance in its season opener last Friday, securing a 6-1 road victory over Winona.

The biggest Wingers win came at No. 2 doubles, where Noah Christenson battled with the Winhawks’ Blake Watts to a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 victory. Isaac Toivonen (6-1, 6-0) and Alex Holm (6-0, 6-4) also won at No. 1 and 3 singles, respectively.

With the teams of Nick Powers and Travis Toivonen (6-3, 6-1), Marcus Veith and Josh Lyons (6-2, 6-1) and Alex Bettich and Nick Meyer (6-2, 6-4), Red Wing swept the doubles.
