Boys Basketball: Post player powers Holy Angels past Red Wing

Red Wing managed to stay tied with Academy of Holy Angels at halftime, 34-34. But the Wingers did not have an answer for the Stars’ Charlie Koontz as the 6-foot-6 senior went off for 31 points on 12 of 15 shooting to help Holy Angels to a 69-63 Missota Conference victory Tuesday in Richfield.

“He was the difference tonight,” Red Wing head coach Doug Toivonen said.

Along with Koontz’ big night, the Stars got a 20-point outing from guard Taylor BonGiovanni.

For the Wingers, Ben Miller kept the team in the game with 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting to go along with eight rebounds.

“Ben really played well tonight. He shot the ball well and he got to the basket,” Doug Toivonen said.

“Just defensively, we were not very good tonight, and we kind of let them dictate the game.”

Ty Buck added 17 points for Red Wing, and Jon Sevlie came up with 15 points and four assists in the losing effort.

The Wingers (15-8, 4-7 Missota) resume conference play Friday at home against Northfield.
