Gymnastics: Red Wing falls to Chanhassen/Chaska

Carlie Sandstrom and Morgan Hughes went two and three in the all-around competition, but Red Wing could not keep pace with Chanhassen/Chaska, falling in a Missota Conference meet, 135.875-123.775.

“We’re very pleased with that score, it’s just short of our season-best from last week against Northfield,” said Red Wing assistant coach Brian Jenson. “We’re pretty much on pace with where we want to be.”

Sandstrom’s score of 31.225 in the all-around took second place, closely followed by Hughes’ 28.925. Sandstrom’s best finish in an event came on the balance beam, a 7.9 that tied for fifth. Hughes took third in the beam with a personal-best 8.3 while also taking fifth on the vault with an 8.45.

Irina Anderson took second on the vault with an 8.775.

The Wingers have three regular-season meets left, including Friday’s Missota visit to Farmington. On Tuesday, Red Wing will head to Northfield for a triangular with the Raiders and Tigers before setting off for a non-conference contest in Hudson, Wis. The Missota Conference meet is Feb. 7, followed by the Section 1A meet eight days later.

Irina Anderson won the vault with a 9.1, and took third on the vault with an 8.2 to lead Red Wing to a third-place showing in the Silver Division of the River Falls Invitational Saturday.

Morgan Hughes placed fourth in the balance beam competition with a 7.75, one spot ahead of teammate Carlie Sandstrom’s 7.4.
