Boys Basketball: Wingers' defense overwhelms Albert Lea

Jon Sevlie became the third Winger to lead his team in scoring in as many games as the ninth-ranked (3A) Red Wing boys basketball team upended Albert Lea, 59-36, in a road contest Tuesday evening.

Sevlie scored 16 points while dishing out three assists as one of just two Wingers in double-digit points. Ty Buck, who had a team-high six rebounds, had 11 points.

Ben Miller scored nine points while Isaac Toivonen added eight points, three steals and three assists.

Red Wing led 33-22 at the half, then clamped down even more on the defensive end, allowing just 14 points over the final 18 minutes.

“Offensively we were just OK,” said Red Wing head coach Doug Toivonen. “We missed a lot of inside shots and missed some free throws, but our defense frustrated Albert Lea. We were very good on defense, and we rebounded very well in the second half. It was a great defensive effort.”

The Wingers (3-0) will take a break over the holiday before hosting Ellsworth Tuesday.
