Football: First win eludes Wingers

Losing to teams by an average of 40.5 points prior to Friday’s Missota Conference game with New Prague, the Wingers found themselves within striking distance of a win against the Trojans, who were also seeking their first win of the season.

The game came down to one point, and once again, Red Wing found itself on the short end in a 14-13 loss at New Prague.

“We turned the ball over too much. It’s just tough to come back from a couple of costly miscues,” said Wingers’ head coach Matt Schutz. “We wanted to win that game pretty badly.

After both teams failed to score in the first quarter, New Prague punched in the first touchdown as running back Nathan Zweber broke the plane on a 3-yard run. The ensuing kick from Jake Klein was good.

Then with 47 seconds left until halftime, Ben Munson intercepted a pass from the Trojans’ Tyler Johnson, then raced 50 yards downfield for the score. The extra point by Gunnar Tubbs tied the game 7-7 just before halftime.

Late in the third, New Prague took the lead, thanks to another score by Zweber. This time, the New Prague senior picked off an Isaac Toivonen pass in the red zone. Ninety-six yards later, Zweber reached the end zone for a touchdown, and Klein booted the extra point to make it 14-7 Trojans.

Just 92 seconds later, Isaac redeemed himself, connecting with little brother Travis Toivonen for a 15-yard pass for a touchdown. On the extra point, Tubbs’ kick went wide left, keeping the Wingers in a 14-13 deficit. Neither team was able to cross the goal line for the rest of the game as New Prague snuck out with its first victory.

“We did a lot of things right to win the game,” Schultz said. “We moved the ball nice and that was a real positive for us. Defensively, we played pretty well.”

Isaac Toivonen finished 8 of 17 passing for 108 yards, and was the Wingers’ top rusher with 58 yards on 14 carries. Tait Kelly also saw time at quarterback before being knocked out with a shoulder and elbow injury, rushing 10 times for 18 yards. Travis Toivonen finished with four catches for 61 yards, and Nick Connelly led Red Wing’s defense with 14 tackles.

Red Wing (0-7, 0-6 Missota) closes out the regular season Wednesday at home vs. Chanhassen.
