Girls Tennis: Red Wing sends two to section final four

Red Wing's Nicole Schammel and Emily Stegora, the Wingers' No. 1 doubles pair, went 3-0 Thursday at the individual Section 1A girls tennis tournament, including a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Rochester Century that puts the two into Tuesday's final four .

"They played brilliantly," said Red Wing head coach Matt Kavanagh. "It was easily the best tennis I’ve seen them play all year. It was beautiful to watch, especially considering Century beat us handily a week ago. To watch them take them apart was nice."

Schammel and Stegora began the tournament with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Austin’s Abbey Ball and Emily Johannesen, followed by a 6-1, 6-1, quarterfinal win over Northfield’s Annika Johnson and Elizabeth Pritchard. That led into the showdown with Century’s Alison Miller and Nicole Phillipps.

Up next for the duo is a semifinal match against another Century pair, the top-seeded duo of Katherine Aney and Madison Kircher.

No other Red Wing players made it out of the first round, ending any other state-tournament hopes for the Wingers.
