Girls Tennis: Red Wing can't knock off Century

Trying to surprise second-seeded and eighth-ranked Rochester Century in the Section 1AA tournament Thursday, Red Wing’s strategy was to stack its singles.

Problem was, the Panthers put in their own powerful lineup in singles competition, which put the Wingers out of the section playoffs as Rochester Century won 6-1.

“We went with the best lineup we could,” said Red Wing head coach Matt Kavanagh, “unfortunately, they went with their best singles lineup and neutralized us.”

At No. 4 singles, Nicole Schammel gave the Wingers a fighting chance, but she fell to Sheridan Hawkins 6-4, 6-2.

The lone win for Red Wing came at No. 2 doubles as the pair of Serena Feehan and McKenzie Muelken won a second-set tiebreaker to sweep Century’s Sunny Zheng and Elizabeth Fink, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).

“(Feehan and Muelken) did fantastic; they came back in the second set down 5-2 to force a tiebreaker,” Kavanagh said. “They saved at least two set points to take that 10-8 win. It was much nicer to win that tiebreaker there instead of going to the third set.

“It was also the last match that came off the court. All the girls who were off the court were dejected. They got to see that match and that seemed to lift their spirits.”

The Section 1AA individual tournament begins next Thursday in Rochester.
