Girls Tennis: Red Wing sweeps home triangular

Red Wing's Claire Carson connects with a forehand during her No. 3 singles match against Andover's Meghan Strauss Saturday at Twin Bluff Middle School.

Even as Red Wing tinkered with its lineup, the Wingers still found a way to win.

Hosting a triangular meet against Andover and Cretin-Derham Hall Saturday at Twin Bluff Middle School, Red Wing went 2-0 with a 4-3 win against the Huskies and a 6-1 victory against the Raiders.

“Today was a good opportunity to shuffle the line,” said Wingers’ head coach Matt Kavanagh. “In the second match (against Cretin-Derham Hall) was the strongest lineup we’ve had so far this season. I think we learned a lot today.”

Red Wing’s doubles did not lose a single match on Saturday despite the team using six different sets of players as Kavanagh continues to tinker with the lineup.

The Wingers’ toughest doubles win came against the Huskies where the No. 3 duo of Katie Carlson and McKenzie Muelken battled their way to a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 win over Emily Belschner and Brooke Haaf at No. 3.

“Our big strength this season is our doubles depth,” Kavanagh said. “It’s a huge asset to have.”

In the first match against Andover, Red Wing’s lone singles win came from freshman Emily Otteson. At No. 2 singles, Otteson came away with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alissa Kuebelbeck. Then against the Raiders, Otteson moved to No. 1 singles and won 6-1, 6-2 against Molly Hynes.

“Emily went from losing a tight three-set game on Saturday and then won both of her matches today,” Kavanagh said. “It was an encouraging thing to see.”

Also tallying singles wins for the Wingers against C-DH were Nicole Schammel and Claire Carson at No. 2 and 4, respectively.

Red Wing stays at home for its next meet, hosting East Ridge on Tuesday.
