Gymnastics: Red Wing finishes season on high note

The Wingers capped their season by posting 10 season bests, including a team score of 129.275, and finishing sixth out of eight teams at the Section 1A meet Saturday in Winona.

"It definitely was a positive finish for us," Red Wing coach Beth Mayer said. "We've been waiting for the girls to hit at the same time."

Eighth-grader Maria Furlong earned Red Wing's top score in the vault, registering a season-best mark of 8.925. She also had the team's best score in the floor exercise (8.825).

Furlong and freshman Kassidy Coplan each posted season-best scores in the all-around competition, registering totals of 33.275 and 32.65, respectively. Coplan had two more season-best scores: She posted an 8.675 in the vault and an 8.25 in the floor exercise.

In addition, Coplan earned Red Wing's best score on the balance beam (8.375).

Irina Anderson, an eighth-grader, earned Red Wing's top score on the uneven bars (8.0), while sophomore Molly Hart registered a season-best score in the floor exercise (8.45).

The Wingers' three other season-best scorers came via team totals in the vault (34.375), on the balance beam (31.275) and in the floor exercise (33.35).

While no Red Wing entrants earned a top-10 finish or a berth in the state tournament, the future looks bright for the Wingers. The team's lineup consisted of one sophomore, two freshman and five eighth-graders.

"There's a tremendous amount of potential on that team," Mayer said. "We definitely see they're already working some high-level skills."

Red Wing student-athletes earned several awards at the section meet. Coplan, Furlong and Anderson were named all-section in the vault. Coplan also was an all-section honoree on the balance beam and Furlong was all-section in the floor exercise.

The honors were bestowed upon gymnasts whose average score in five competitions met or exceeded a required score. The requirement in the floor exercise and vault was 8.5. The standard on the balance beam was an 8.2.

Coplan and sophomore Kaleigh Owens were named to the all-section academic gold team, which corresponds to a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher. Hart was named to the academic silver team (3.5-3.74 GPA).
