Gymnastics: Mason shines, Wingers take fifth

Cannon Falls native Sveta Mason won three events at the Missota Conference Championships while Red Wing took fifth place out of five schools with a 126.20.

Wingers coach Beth Mayer said that her team was late to Friday's event because it got lost on the way to New Prague. When the team arrived, it had just nine minutes to prepare for the first event. The Wingers often have 30 to 40 minutes to get ready, according to Mayer.

The Wingers performed well, according to Mayer, in spite of the short warm-up time. However, they didn't place in the top 10 in any event.

Maria Furlong, an eighth-grader, was the team's top finisher in the vault (8.75), uneven bars (7.625), floor exercise (8.6) and all-around competition (32.25).

"We worked very, very hard on her vault this week and she got a season best," Mayer said. "It was fun and exciting for her."

Kassidy Coplan scored an 8.225 on the balance beam and was the Wingers' top finisher.

Mason, who competes for the Northfield/Cannon Falls co-op team, took first on the uneven bars (9.65), balance beam (9.25) and floor exercise (9.75). Her scores on the uneven bars and floor exercise were career-bests.

"She's a great athlete to work with," Northfield coach Melissa Bernhard said. "She works extremely hard (and is) very coachable. That's what helps her to succeed so much."

Northfield, the defending Class AA state champion, won the event with a 149.30.
