Swim and Dive: Wingers defeat Falcons in first home meet
Hosting its first meet of the young season, the Red Wing girls' swim and dive team came away with its first win as well, defeating Faribault, 96-91, on Thursday at the Twin Bluff Middle School pool.
Red Wing had five victories on the night, beginning with Teegan Beyers with a time of two minutes, 13.86 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle. Other Wingers recording wins were: Riley Marty with a score of 142.30 in the 1-meter dive, Cecelia DeJong in the 100 butterfly (1:00.54), Beyers in the 100 freestyle (58.24) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Beyers, DeJong, Madison Beyers and Greta Lane (4:03.71).
“It has been a great first week for us competing,” Red Wing girls’ swim and dive head coach Mikayla Beuch said. “We have been dealing with a lot of illnesses that have kept some of our top performers out, but the younger athletes have really stepped up to fill the holes.
“We have a few teams in our sight that we are looking to really compete against for some close meets. Riding off the end-of-season success from last year, the girls are fired up to be an even bigger presence in the Big Nine Conference this year.”
Red Wing next travels to Rochester Mayo on Tuesday.
