Boys Swimming: Red Wing second at home invite
Hosting four teams for its annual invitational, the Red Wing boys' swimming and diving team finished in second place Saturday.
The Wingers scored 542 points, bested only by Park of Cottage Grove's 801. Bloomington Kennedy was third at 412, followed by Tartan's 368.
“This gave us an opportunity to go out and compete against some new faces, which takes a little pressure off the boys and allows them to have a little fun with it,” said Red Wing head coach Mikayla Beuch. “We saw the most amount of time drops this weekend, with many dropping the largest chunk of time they have this season. We got snowed out from our dual on Thursday so I could tell the boys had a lot of adrenaline built up and needed to race.
The meet opened with Abe De Jong setting a personal best with an 11-dive score of 297.80. Then in the first swim event of the day, the 200-yard medley relay of Ian Johnson, Nick Bayley, Willie Meacham and Jayden Jech won with a time of 1 minute, 47.22 seconds.
Meacham picked up one of two individual wins for the Wingers, placing first in the 100 butterfly at 54.77. Johnson also got a win in the 100 backstroke at 1:00.16.
Jech had a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (24.39) and 500 freestyle (5:29.46), and Meacham (200 individual medley; 2:13.12) and Nick Nordenskjold (100 freestyle; 59.43) each had third-place finishes.
The team also put together two second-place relay teams in the 200 freestyle relay (De Jong, Johnson, Bayley, Nordenskjold; 1:40.56) and 400 freestyle relay (Meacham, De Jong, Johnson, Jech; 3:41.06).
Red Wing will host Austin for a Big Nine Conference dual Thursday before making up last week's meet with Mankato West on Saturday.
