Boys Swimming: Wingers take loss to Winona
Red Wing swimmers Willie Meacham and Ian Johnson picked up strong wins for the boys' swimming and diving team in a 91-77 Big Nine Conference loss to Winona Thursday at Twin Bluff Middle School.
Meacham put forth a season-best time in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.21 seconds. He also finished second in the 200 individual medley at 2:11.01.
Then in the 100 backstroke, Johnson snuck by a Winona swimmer for a first-place finish at 1:01.44.
“We took this as an opportunity to stretch our limits and put some athletes in new events tonight. We have our Winger Invite coming up so some guys have a better idea of times they want to be shooting for at the invite,” said Red Wing head coach Mikayla Beuch. “Ian Johnson had a strong competition in the 100 back tonight. … Willie Meacham looked determined taking first in the 100 fy. Andrew Hines was able to take first in the 50 free JV and then later come in to a close second in the 500 free JV, Zach Hofius showed this versatility competing strong in both breaststroke and sprint freestyle events. Abe De Jong has been doing well holding down diving by himself, and with our younger diver Tyler Gorden coming back after an injury, we will be happy to have another diver on the roster starting next week.”
Next Thursday, Jan. 11, the Wingers head to Mankato West.
