Cross-Country: Winger boys win Mayo invite; girls fifth

All five of Red Wing's top runners on Thursday finished in the top 20 as the boys' cross-country team won the Mayo Invitational at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester.

Compiling a team score of 50 points, the Wingers held off Rosemount (85), Winona (114), La Crosse Logan (154) and Owatonna (180) for the championship.

Tom Nemanich was Red Wing's top runner, placing third with a time of 17 minutes, 5.47 seconds, finishing behind Rosemount's Luke Labatte (16:36.41) and Mayo's Spencer Moore (16:50.98).

Tucker Wallin was fifth at 17:13.88, followed by Jonah Leise in 11th at 17:34.32, Weston Wyatt 13th at 17:35.83 and Skyler Bennyhoff 18th in 17:41.69. Asa Beckner was 36th in 18:13.38, and Bryan Zucker was 64th in 18:37.48.

Pine Island also competed on Thursday, placing 19th as a team with 576 points. The Panthers' top runners were Danny Langworthy (68th, 18:38.20), Tanner Horton (85th, 19:04.81), Evan Goplen (124th, 19:54.32), Michael Horkey (143rd, 20:29.77) and Andy Kroll (156th, 20:55.76).

Zumbrota-Mazeppa/Kenyon-Wanamingo was 27th with a score of 864. Cooper Utley (165th, 21:31.43), Willy Heitmann (170th, 21:59.62), Peyton Liffrig (172nd, 22:15.27), Michael Majerus (176th, 22:40.81) and Dylan Mollenhauer (181st, 23:24.02) all contributed to Z-M/K-W's score.

Girls

With Grace Johnson and Tori Leitner finishing in the top 20, the Red Wing girls' cross-country team placed fifth with a team score of 160, which held Winona Cotter's 161 out of the top five.

Stillwater won the girls' meet with 102, followed by Rochester Century (111), Onalaska (126), Rosemount (140) and Red Wing.

Johnson had the Wingers' top time of 20:51.04 while Leitner was 17th in 20:58.10. Grace Dube placed 36th in 21:33.71, Jasmyn Armstrong was 51st in 22:18.24 and Sammi Chandler finished in 54th at 22:23.72. Also running for Red Wing were Carolyn Hanson (85th, 23:24.76) and Sydnee Nelson (113th, 24:14.45).

With seventh-grader Natasha Sortland finishing in 13th at 20:52.69, Z-M/K-W placed 12th as a team with 313 points. After Sortland, Skyler Jacobson (70th, 22:55.04), Natalye Quam (73rd, 23:02.14), Lauren Berg (77th, 23:07.47) and Tess Hokanson (95th, 23:47.68) aided in Z-M/K-W's score.

Pine Island was 20th out of 24 teams with 528. Jocasta Adelsman (76th, 23:07.09), Josselyn Lindahl (94th, 23:47.56), Alyssa Rauk (114th, 24:16.58), Abby Schimek (133rd, 25:23.22) and Annika Adelsman (139th, 25:29.57) all scored for the Panthers.

Winona Cotter freshman Grace Ping won the meet with a time of 18:16.63, beating her younger sister Lauren (19:21.58) for the individual title.
