Softball: Southland upsets Goodhue in extras

GOODHUE – Going into extras in Monday's Section 1A-East opener, a two-out Taylor Bhend single brought home Lily Riddles for what ended up being the game-winning run for sixth-seeded Southland in a 3-2 win over third-seeded Goodhue.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Wildcats got a glimmer of hope when Abby Doerhoefer hit for a single. But she would stay on first as a pop-up ended Goodhue's season earlier than expected.

Emily Benrud extended the game for the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double that brought Ari Thomforde home.

Alissa Bien, Benrud and Doerhoefer all finished with two hits, with Benrud and Doerhoefer each collecting an RBI apiece.

Doerhoefer took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits and four walks with nine strikeouts.

The Wildcats end the year at 7-11 overall.
