Football: Rain, lightning put a damper on Week 1

Due to heavy rain and lightning, three area football teams were forced to postpone their games on Friday.

Playing at Stewartville Friday in a Southern Football Alliance cross-division game, Zumbrota-Mazeppa trailed the Tigers 14-0 before the game was postponed with six minutes left in the first quarter. The two teams will resume play at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Cannon Falls and St. Charles met up in another SFA cross-division game but could not get the contest started before rain and lightning forced the game to be called off. The Bombers and Saints will try again on Saturday, with kickoff set for noon.

In Wisconsin, Ellsworth’s non-conference game with Colfax was riddled with delays before the game was ultimately called off. Panthers head coach Clair Austin said the game will not be made up. Ellsworth (1-0) begins Middle Border Conference play on Friday Sept. 5 at Durand.
