Volleyball: Young Cougars lose in opener

Bringing a young roster out onto the floor for the first time, the Zumbrota-Mazeppa volleyball team lost its season-opening match against St. Charles in three sets, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22.

The Cougars managed a balanced attack, with Breana Haag, Hailey Dykes and Aspen Brubaker each finishing with seven kills.

Senior setter Rachel Mensink tallied 22 set assists and 12 digs for Z-M in the loss.

“It’s kind of a reloading year for us and everyone is just getting used to playing with each other,” said Cougars head coach Stacy Liebenow. “We need to jell a little bit better. … A lot of it was nerves tonight, too; some first-game jitters. We had some good moments, but just couldn’t on any runs.”

Z-M (0-1) goes home on Thursday for a non-conference game with Rochester Mayo.
