Boys Tennis: Tigers players bow out of 1A tournament

Hoping to sneak someone into the state tournament, Lake City’s players could not break through a tough Section 1A field on Thursday at the Rochester Tennis Connection.

Both of the Tigers’ doubles teams won their first-round matches, with Logan Adler and Peyton Fick winning 6-1, 6-3 over St. Paul Humboldt’s Leng Yang and Ger Lee, and Lake City’s Alex McCormick and Landin Burdis won 6-1, 6-1 over Humboldt’s Eh Hay Tha Taw and Sherming Thao. But both teams would bow out in the second round, with Adler and Fick losing 6-0, 6-0 to Rochester Lourdes’ David Turlington and Nico Villarraga, and McCormick and Burdis losing 6-0, 6-0 to Lourdes’ Hadi Berbari and Aneesh Ramamoorthy.

In singles, Lake City’s Brandon Hofschulte won his first match, 6-4, 6-0 over Humboldt’s Vichian Lee before falling in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to Stewartville’s Derrick Fritz. The Tigers’ other singles player, Cort McElmury, lost 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round to Waseca’s Ben Johnson.
