Baseball: Lake City eases into second round

Behind a complete-game gem from John Brown, and Reid Lundell’s return from a neck injury, Lake City ousted Caledonia/Spring Grove from the Section 1AA-East playoffs with a 6-1 victory on Thursday.

Brown pitched seven innings, with one unearned run, seven strikeouts, one walk and three hits in his ledger. Brown also had a hit at the dish, as did teammates Elliot Cox, Jarrett Thomas, Luke Hartzell and Andrew Schmidt.

Lundell finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, with most of the damage coming after a ball nearly found his head.

“Reid got hit in the neck and was out for half an inning,” said Lake City head coach Perry Iberg. “But he came back out and hit two doubles after that. And John was pretty dominant on the mound .”

The Tigers, the No. 4 seed in the bracket, will face either top-seeded La Crescent, or eighth-seeded Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Charles.
