Softball: Z-M reaches Section 1AA-West finals

Zumbrota-Mazeppa already fought back once on Wednesday, coming back from a 3-0 deficit to force extra innings against Stewartville. And in the 10th inning, the second-seeded Cougars got by the third-seeded Tigers with a walk-off single by Alyssa Quam for a 4-3 Section 1AA-West victory in Zumbrota.

With one out, Quam hit a base hit through the middle to score Carley Henning for the game-winning run.

“We had some chances in the eighth and ninth inning and we weren’t able to put them away,” said Cougars’ head coach Kevin Nelson. “But like I told the girls, ‘The one time you need to lead on the scoreboard is at the end of the game.”

Down 3-0 in the sixth inning, Z-M Morgan Olson, who went 4-for-5, led off with one of her two doubles. Two batters later, Tayler Mort drove in a run, and then Hailey Dykes came up with an RBI single. Then after Jackie Matuska had a leadoff single in the seventh, Olson came up with a clutch double to bring in the game-tying run.

Olson also came up with a strong outing in the pitcher’s circle, striking out nine in a complete-game victory.

The fifth-ranked Cougars will face off in the sub-section finals Friday against top-ranked and top-seeded Kasson-Mantorville, which moved on Wednesday with a 4-0 victory over Cannon Falls.
