Baseball: Z-M drops regular-season finale

Trying to get some momentum before the section playoffs, Zumbrota-Mazeppa was tied with Hayfield after six innings before the visiting Vikings pulled away with three seventh-inning runs in an 8-5 victory Tuesday.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars had the bases loaded and had their top hitter on Tuesday, Connor Hegseth, on deck. But before Hegseth could step up to the plate, Hayfield picked off the runner at third base to end the threat.

Hegseth was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the third inning. Jacob Ugland was charged with the loss after pitching three innings in relief.

Drew Streightiff went 3-for-4 with a triple for the Vikings, while Connor Nelson went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the victory.

Z-M (3-16) is the No. 7 seed in the Section 1AA-West tournament and will face second-seeded and defending state champion Kasson-Mantorville on Thursday.
