Baseball: Panthers fall for first time

Ellsworth jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings against visiting St. Paul Highland Park. But the Scots weren’t going to lie down for the top-ranked (Division 2) Panthers as they scored eight runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to seal an 8-6 win, pegging Ellsworth with its first loss of the season.

Providing the firepower for St. Paul Highland Park was Howie Sands, who finished with three hits and five RBI. Teammate Mark Jackman also had three hits in the Scots’ victory.

For the Panthers, Michael Koch finished with a pair of hits, and Nick Taranto drove in three runs. As a team, Ellsworth finished with 13 hits, compared to 11 for St. Paul Highland Park.

The Panthers resume Middle Border Conference play on Monday, taking on Somerset.
