Baseball: Run hard to come by in Z-M loss

Despite outhitting Pine Island 7-5 on Wednesday, Zumbrota-Mazeppa struggled to get runs home as the host Panthers won 6-1 in Hiawatha Valley League action in Pine Island.

Leading the Cougars’ offense was Chase Steffen, who went 2-for-4 and drove in Mark Yeakel with a base hit in the bottom of the third inning for the team’s lone run. On the mound, Cody Hinrichs went all six innings, allowing five hits, eight walks, four earned runs while striking out three.

For Pine Island, Adam Pleschourt hit a two-run double in the second inning, and Jared Lohmeyer also had a double in the home win.

Z-M (2-9, 2-8 HVL) is slated to play Pine Island again Monday in Zumbrota.
